Well fracturing is a process used to create a flow path between the reservoir rocks that hold oil/gas and the well drill hole. In today’s business jargon it has been termed “fracking” or “frac” is the suffix for related equipment.
Hydraulic fracturing was developed and pioneered in the 1940s to provide a safer method to break up the rock that leads to oil or gas and uses high pressure frac fluid and proppants to achieve this. A proppant is a solid material, in most cases it is treated sand or man-made ceramic materials The proppant is designed to keep an induced hydraulic rock fracture open, during or following a fracturing process. In most cases, fracking procedures can increase oil or gas production from 1.5 to 30 times the rate of initial flow.
Frac services and equipment are heavily relied on by the oil & gas industry with fracking equipment needs spreading nationally across the US, Canada and soon to Mexico. As an example in Texas, fracking areas include the Eagle Ford, Haynesville and Barnett shale areas.
Generally frac tanks are a type of storage tank, storage tanks are generally used for holding oil, chemicals, saltwater or other industrial materials. Because of strict environmental laws these tanks have to perform flawlessly and to high standards. That is why when frac tank manufacturers build tanks they must meet the high standard of the industry and the government regulations. All frac tanks are hydro pressure tested to ensure for the safe storage of liquids.
Some general tank construction specifications include: ¼” steel, smooth walls and epoxy linings, are standard.
Numerous other options are available including inside manifolds, outside manifolds, gel lines, heat coils, sign plates, additional man ways, mixer configurations and additional valves or fittings.
Numerous manufacturers sell steel frac tanks in a wide variety of capacities, 10,000 to 21,000 gallons and with numerous features such as: internal and external manifolds, connecting catwalk systems and heating and insulation capabilities.
Oil field customers must decide which frac tank model is right for their application. Some customers may need corrugated wall frac tanks or smooth wall frac tanks or insulated smooth wall frac tanks. Insulated frac tanks allow hot liquid to remain hot for longer periods of time. Insulated frac tanks reduce the need for re-heating, and may eliminate the need for onsite heating altogether. The capabilities of an insulated frac tank, as tested during a very cold winter night, lost only 10°F during a 72 hour test. Today frac tanks that are insulated with eco-friendly and UL listed EPS panels are the norm, which makes the frac tank almost entirely recyclable.
The reason why frac tanks are typically available as a corrugated wall frac tank or a smooth wall frac tank is as following. Smooth wall frac tanks allow for easier clean out due to the design of the walls being flat inside. Some frac tank manufacturers will offer both internal manifold and external manifold options, plus a front mount OSHA-compliant ladder or a side mount OSHA-compliant ladder.
Additionally, frac tanks are ideal for on-site storage of liquid waste including run-off water, diesel fuel, glycol, oils, ground water storage, de-icing fluid, waste products and more, this is ideal for manufacturing facilities, construction sites, waste-water treatment facilities, chemical facilities, oil or gas drilling sites and airports.
Frac Tank Transport
Frac tanks are easily hauled using a roll-off truck or trailer or they can be moved by a power only tractor, especially if it is for a long distance move.
Great West Transportation services include: drive-away, tow-away, hotshot service, heavy haul and power only.
What is a D.O.T. Buster?
This is a frac tank with a slanted front that will not be over height on virtually any tractor.
It has standard tow latching via standard 3/8″ plate 5th wheel kingpin.
The axle and wheel combination disperses a weight of 22,500 pounds per axle and has a USDOT approved air braking and lighting system on standard 11.00 x 22.5 tires on steel wheel rims.
