First Time Flatbed Shipping Tips

Following are some tips we would like to offer in order to make your flatbed shipping experience with Great Western Transportation the best possible. Plus, ensuring your shipping costs are within your budget and that you receive the best possible flatbed trucking service. Great Western Transportation strives to make the first time customer a returning customer.
Crating
You as the shipper will know your product best, thus should properly package and secure all products that will be crated, this prevents items from shifting.
Shrinkwrap
When possible shrink-wrap or provide waterproof wrapping for freight that may be damaged by water or is susceptible to dust. Especially for materials susceptible to permanent damage by water.
Corner Protectors
Let the driver know if corner protectors or V-boards are required under straps, to avoid damage. Let the driver know if the straps have to be positioned in specific places to avoid damage. If you have additional cargo strap or corner protection questions feel free to call ahead for more information about cargo protection devices currently available.
Forklift and Rigging
For all extra services required to lift the freight onto the trailer let your Great Western Transportation consultant know at truck booking time, not after. These extra services may include the rental or the need for a crane, heavy-duty fork-lift or rigging services.
Flatbed Tractor Trailer Transit Q & A
Flatbed LTL
If I do not need the whole flatbed trailer can I pay for only a portion? Yes, using only a portion of a flatbed trailer is possible, and less expensive. This is also referred to as LTL, which means less than truckload. Our freight consultants will immediately tell you if this is an option depending on your freight weight and dimensions.
Flatbed Tarping
Do you provide tarps and tarping over loads? Yes, as long as you tell us that you require tarping when scheduling the truck.
Flatbed Side-Kits
Do you provide trailers with side-kits? Yes, we can get a tractor-trailer with side-kits, you must specify this when booking the trailer. These types of flatbed trailers are not so common.
Flatbed Ramps
Do you have trailers with ramps? Yes, we can get a tractor-trailer with ramps, you must tell us this when booking the trailer. Ramps also have a maximum weight capacity.
Conestoga Trailer
I require a Conestoga trailer, can you provide this type of trailer? Yes, we can get a Conestoga trailer, you must tell us this when booking the trailer and tell us the exact length, width and height of the freight. Conestoga trailers have dimension limits just as dry van (box van) does.
Freight Shrink-wrap
Do you provide shrink-wrap service? The driver or we do not provide shrink-wrap services.
Landoll Trailer
Can you provide a Landoll trailer? Yes we can, however, we must know well in advance at booking time. There are several types of Landolls depending on the freight weight and if it is wheeled and under its own power will determine the Landoll trailer type.
Additional Insurance
If the equipment we are shipping is very expensive, is your company insured for expensive freight? Yes, our company can always get supplemental insurance for your freight. When booking the trailer our freight consultants always ask the value of the freight and recommend an appropriate additional coverage insurance option.
Flatbed Freight Crating
Do you provide crating services? Crating services can be contracted from a local crating service company for all your shipments. Our company or the truck driver does not provide crating services.
Air Ride Flatbed Trailers
For fragile electronic control equipment can you provide air ride trailers?
Yes, air ride flatbed trailers are available, but at truck booking time it must be specified that an air ride trailer is required. Air ride flatbed trailers are not as common but are always available.
